A knocked-over cup of tea is one of the most common reasons a Lenovo laptop comes into our workshop. The good news is that a quick response gives you a far better chance of a cheap repair. What you do in the first few minutes matters more than anything else, so here it is in order.

1. Switch it off now, don’t shut it down

Water itself does little harm to a switched-off board. The damage happens when current flows through the liquid. Don’t wait for Windows to shut down or save your work. Hold the power button for about ten seconds until the laptop goes off completely.

2. Unplug everything

Pull out the charger first, then any USB devices, docks and cables. Current Lenovo laptops have an internal battery that you can’t remove yourself, so the board still has power inside even when the screen is off. That is one more reason to get it opened up quickly.

3. Drain it

  • Wipe off what you can see with a towel or kitchen roll.
  • Open the laptop as wide as it goes and stand it upside down, like a tent, so liquid runs out of the keyboard rather than further in.
  • If it is a ThinkPad, many T, X and L series models have a spill-resistant keyboard with drainage channels underneath. Turning it upside down helps this work, but it is not a guarantee: a large spill, or one near the edge, can still reach the board.

What not to do

  • Don’t switch it back on to see if it works. A laptop that seems fine after a spill can still have liquid on the board. Turning it on is how a cleanable spill becomes a burnt-out component.
  • Don’t use a hairdryer. The heat can warp plastics and the screen, and blowing air pushes liquid further inside.
  • Don’t bother with rice. It doesn’t draw liquid out from under chips. It just wastes the time in which corrosion starts.
  • Don’t charge it, even if the battery is low.

Why the type of drink matters

Clean water dries with few residues. Tea and coffee with milk or sugar, fizzy drinks, juice, wine and beer leave sticky, conductive residues that corrode the board over the following days. The laptop might even work for a week and then fail. If it was anything other than water, have it cleaned professionally, whatever state it seems to be in.

What a liquid damage repair involves

On the bench we disconnect the battery, strip the laptop down and inspect the board under a microscope. Affected areas are cleaned in an ultrasonic bath with a specialist solution that removes residues from under the components. Typical outcomes are:

  • a clean only, when the laptop was switched off quickly. This is the cheapest outcome, and the reason speed matters;
  • a replacement keyboard when the board is fine but the keys are sticky or dead. On many IdeaPads and Yogas the keyboard is part of the top case, which we replace as one piece (keyboard repairs);
  • component-level board repair where corrosion has damaged power circuits (motherboard repairs).

Worried about your files?

In most spills the SSD survives even when the board doesn’t. If the laptop won’t start and you need your documents or photos, we can recover them first, then repair the laptop or move them to a new one. See Lenovo data recovery.
