Lenovo laptop data recovery
Laptop dead, SSD not detected or files deleted: we recover data from every Lenovo laptop at our London SE1 lab.
When the laptop can’t be repaired, the files usually can
Most Lenovo laptops keep your files on an M.2 SSD that can be taken out and recovered on its own, even when the laptop itself is dead. Older models use a 2.5-inch hard drive or SSD. Some thin models and Chromebooks have the storage soldered to the board, and the board is repaired first.
- SSD not detected: controller and firmware repair
- Deleted files or a laptop reset: logical recovery
- Dead or liquid-damaged laptop: the SSD is recovered on its own
- BitLocker: recovery works with your recovery key

What to do straight away
What you do in the first hour often decides how much comes back.
- Stop using the laptop. On an SSD, deleted files can be cleared by the drive itself soon after they are deleted, and every new file written can overwrite what you want back.
- Don’t reset or reinstall Windows to “fix” it. A reset replaces the files you are trying to save.
- Don’t run recovery software on a drive that clicks, buzzes or keeps disappearing. A failing drive can get worse each time it is powered on.
- After a spill, switch it off and leave it off. Unplug the charger and don’t try to dry it with heat. See liquid damage repair.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key if the laptop was encrypted. On Windows laptops signed in with a Microsoft account it is usually saved in that account; work laptops often have it held by the IT department.
Signs the data is at risk
| Symptom | Usually means |
|---|---|
| “No bootable device” or the SSD missing in the BIOS | A failed SSD, a loose drive or a board fault. Physical or firmware recovery. |
| Laptop dead, no lights | A power or board fault. The files are usually still on the SSD and can be recovered on their own. |
| Files deleted, or Windows reset | Logical recovery, if the space hasn’t been reused. |
| Hard drive clicking or buzzing | A mechanical fault. Needs a cleanroom diagnostic. |
| BitLocker recovery screen | The drive is encrypted. Recovery works with your recovery key. |
How data recovery works

When recovery isn’t possible
We tell you honestly at the consultation if the files can’t be saved. The usual reasons are:
- The files were deleted from an SSD some time ago and the drive has already cleared the space.
- The laptop was reset or reinstalled and the old files have been written over.
- The drive is encrypted with BitLocker and the recovery key can’t be found.
If the laptop itself is worth fixing, we can repair it after the recovery: see motherboard repair, SSD upgrades and Windows and software repair.
Questions
Can you recover files from a Lenovo laptop that won’t turn on?
Usually, yes. Most Lenovo laptops keep your files on an M.2 SSD that we can take out and recover on its own. On models with storage soldered to the board, the board is repaired first.
Will you need my BitLocker recovery key?
If the drive is encrypted, yes. Without the key the data can’t be read by anyone. It is often saved in your Microsoft account, or held by your employer’s IT team.
How much does data recovery cost?
The consultation is free. Deleted files on a healthy drive are £99 + VAT, and physical or SSD recoveries cost more; the full price list is on this page. No data, no recovery fee.
Should I try recovery software first?
Only on a healthy drive where files were deleted, and never install it on the same drive. If the drive clicks, isn’t detected or the laptop is dead, stop and book a consultation.
Do you repair the laptop as well?
Yes. Once your files are safe we can quote for the repair. See how a repair works and our price calculator.
